Sigh That's Crossref DOI Submission XML for you: The person_name element MUST have a surname element. It also may have a @name-style attribute with the value of 'given-only'.

I think Crossref DOI Submission XML is a good example of a grown vs. designed document model.

Oh boy! XSpec v3.0 is scheduled for April this year, including (among other things) SchXslt 1.9.5 as replacement for the skeleton implementation. I'm at the ready to fix the issues that will be detected this way.
