Do you work in health archives? Do you have any idea what happened to the Florence Nightingale Digitization Project?

Afaict, this ambitious collaborative project to provide online access to 2,300-ish of her 14,000 letters just... vanished? All the URLs I can find for it fail to resolve. "Partner" institutions don't seem to have them. I've got an email in to the archive that was heading up this project, but it's a weird well-hyped database that seems to be MIA.

𝗤𝗨𝗜𝗖𝗞! 𝗙𝗘𝗘𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗕𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗧!

Academic publisher Taylor & Francis recently sold many of its authors’ works to Microsoft for $10 million, without asking or paying the authors — to train Microsoft’s large language models!

Taylor & Francis asked their journal "Learning, Media and Technology" to cut peer review time to 15 days — absurdly little time — to crank out more content.

And Taylor & Francis's subsidiary Routledge told staff that it was “extra important” to meet publishing targets for 2024. It moved some book deadlines from 2025 to 2024. Why? To meet its deadline with Microsoft.

Another academic publisher, Wiley, made a $44 million deal to feed academic books to LLMs — with no way for authors to opt out. They say “it is in the public interest for these emerging technologies to be trained on high-quality, reliable information.”

When you publish with one of the big academic publishers, they try to make you sign a contract saying they can do whatever they want with your work. That means anything.

Longshot: does anyone who follows me on here know anyone who knows anyone who might know someone on the JavaDoc development team? I think there's a bug in the new JavaDoc API and the maze of twisty paths to report a bug with Oracle is (a) described incorrectly in the JavaDoc FAQ and (b) probably pointless anyway.

Die Woche der Hölle

Die Arbeit war für mich in den letzten drei Wochen schon anstrengend, aber jetzt sind die Anforderungen höllisch geworden. Die #Geschäftsleitung sagt, dass es in den #Supermärkten einen #Sonderverkauf für #Salate gibt, deshalb müssen wir draußen auf dem #Feld so hart arbeiten, um so viel wie möglich zu ernten, bevor es dunkel wird. Es geht das Gerücht, dass wir, wenn wir abends vom Feld zurückkehren, in die #Packhalle geschickt werden.

Ewelina, die neben mir arbeitet, sagt, wir sollten uns weigern, nach Einbruch der Dunkelheit in die Packhalle zu gehen, wenn sie uns darum bitten. Aber sie betont, dass wir uns alle weigern müssen. "Es ist sehr wichtig, dass wir zusammenhalten", sagt sie. Ich nicke, dass ich das verstehe, und verspreche, es nicht zu vermasseln. Dann machen wir uns eilig wieder an die Arbeit, um vor Einbruch der Dunkelheit so viel wie möglich zu schaffen.

Nach zwölf Stunden Schicht schaltet einer der Chefs die Traktorbeleuchtung ein und wir arbeiten im Scheinwerferlicht weiter, obwohl wir alle so müde sind, dass wir kaum noch stehen können. Mit schmerzenden, geschwollenen Händen pflücken wir weiter die Salate, legen sie in Kisten und werfen sie in den Lastwagen. So geht es mehr als eine Stunde lang weiter, und obwohl einige Stimmen sagen, dass wir es einfach nicht mehr schaffen, arbeiten wir alle weiter. Wir verpassen unsere Chance, eine Rebellion anzuzetteln. Der Trotz ertrinkt in Erschöpfung.

Sie schauen weg

Nach einem Monat verließ ich den Hof. Ich erhielt eine Barauszahlung von 1.500 € (1.275 £). Meine Kollegen umarmten mich herzlich und sagten mir, ich solle auf jeden Fall wiederkommen.

Am letzten Nachmittag schaue ich mir den Laden an, in dem Gemüse, Salate und #Brokkoli von unserem Hof an die Öffentlichkeit verkauft werden. Der Laden sieht aus wie ein #Bio-Paradies; er ist schön und rustikal und riecht gut. Auf dem Gemüse befindet sich ein Etikett, auf dem die Herkunft angegeben ist. Oft steht auf dem Etikett "Deutschland", aber da der Laden vor Ort ist, sieht es so aus, als ob die Produkte tatsächlich auf dem Hof angebaut werden. Doch alles, außer den Salaten und dem Brokkoli, wird im Großhandel eingekauft und oft nur von faulen Gemüsestücken getrennt und gut gewaschen.

#Deutsche in großen, teuren Autos kommen hierher zum Einkaufen, und wenn sie einen von uns sehen, schauen sie normalerweise weg. Einmal bemerkte ich einen prüfenden Blick, den einer der Kunden auf die unansehnlichen Schlafsäle warf, aber wir bewegen uns normalerweise nicht im Hof, wenn der Laden geöffnet ist. Wir sind bei der Arbeit. Ich weiß nicht einmal, ob die Kunden überhaupt wissen wollen, wie unsere Arbeitsbedingungen sind.

When gall wasps lay their eggs on plants it causes the plant cells to change...colors and patterns found no where else in the plant will form. It's unclear how much of this is due to the action of the young wasp larvae and how much is due to the egg itself. But what you see here are all *plant* cells that have been retrained in service of little wasps inside. Ideal egg cases and pupae for their young, living plant cells with defensive mechanisms and food supplies for the wasps.
