Mitte April haben wir unseren Webauftritt neu gestaltet. Die Nutzer:innen des FID werden es längst bemerkt haben: sowohl die Portalseiten, als auch das Discovery (unser Suchsystem), sowie das Romanistik-Blog haben ein Redesign erfahren. The strangest thing happened.
I just opened a bag I have stored in my attic, and while it looks like my stuff from the outside, it’s NOT MINE!
Some stickers inside have a #36c3 Design, dating the bag to 2019.
There are valuable and personal items in there. So far the Person might be called Maya and all stickers and notes are English, French and Swedish. The person must have been in Stuttgart before Congress.
Please help me #FindMaya!

One of my larger complaints about Linux Foundation events is that they are very much targeted at corporations with large budgets to send people to conferences.

For example, as someone who has mostly been an indie OSS maintainer over their career, I would love to go to Open Source Summit and meet up with people to discuss what problems they are having with the software I maintain and how we can collaborate on resolving those problems.

But my choices are to register as a "hobbyist" (a frankly demeaning thing to call an indie maintainer) at $249, which requires me to go ask them for a discount code (also frankly demeaning), or register at the full $949 rate, or maybe I could get the "small business" discount code which brings it down to *only* $500. Man, what a favor, huh?

I understand that putting on these events is very costly, but when indie OSS maintainers are given the option of paying nearly $1000 or having to go ask someone for a "hobbyist" discount code, it seems very disrespectful to the maintainers who are building the actual software that this summit is about.

Do you really think the guy in Nebraska who is holding up all modern digital infrastructure in his spare time has the money to spend $949 to go to a conference? For all the talking we do about building inclusive conferences, this has to include *access* for indie maintainers.

Welcher Ort in den Niederlanden (und welche Unterkunft dort) ist Ende April/Anfang Mai für einen kurzen Urlaubsaufenthalt zu empfehlen? Ich war schon mehrfach in Den Haag und in Amsterdam, Maastricht, Venlo. Ich komme vorher aus Eemshaven und muss zwischendurch einen Tag nach Dortmund^^ Ich mag Wasser, durchaus etwas städischer, ... Und Unterkunft für 2 sollte nach Möglichkeit nicht deutlich über 100 Eu/Nacht sein. Bin auf Vorschläge gespannt :)

“Open source generative AI” is such a pipe dream and it’s honestly sad to see people fall for it.

This tech has a hard requirement on extraction and massive material investment in order to deliver any usable results. It’s inherently capitalist and an “open source” paint job won’t change that.

In that regard it’s even worse than crypto. A blockchain can still provide its function for a small number of participants, however nonsensical that function is. But an LLM or diffusion model needs the massive amount of data and compute to work AT ALL. And the only real motivation to put in these staggering amounts of resources is a return on a capital investment.
